Flax flowers for New Zealand flavour

I spent part of today partaking in part of the Nelson Arts Festival programme, where I learnt how to make several forms of flowers from the leaves of the native New Zealand flax;  Harakeke or Phormium tenax

From seemingly unlikely weaving as if by magic came quite beautiful flowers of flax; and as with all good crafts there are variations on the basic technique as to how the final product looks.

Thank you Missey for you instruction today, it was much enjoyed and I intend to continue to practice and to use my new skills in floristry.

Leucospermum now flowering in Nelson New Zealand

We now have available good stock of the long lasting and striking Leucospermum flowers.

Commonly called ‘pin flowers’ because of thier unusual shaped flowers.  These flowers last up to three weeks when picked for flower arrangements, and they look striking in both bunches of flowers and flower arrangements in a container.

spring Tulips

Tulips in the garden are growing quickly now the temperatures are warming up outside, and the buds are showing the bright colours of the flowers.   I did a little test on the bulbs I planted this year; half I planted straight into the garden in early April; the other half I put in the bottom of the fridge for a month before planting them in the garden.

The bulbs that went into the fridge are flowering first.
